JoSAA Counselling 2026

A practical guide to registration, choice filling, seat allotment, online reporting, documents and Freeze/Float/Slide decisions—built to help you avoid common counselling mistakes.

Last updated: September 26, 2026 · Always verify dates, payments and actions on the official JoSAA portal.

Use only the official JoSAA portal for counselling actions

PrepMocker is an independent student-practice platform and is not JoSAA. Never share passwords, OTPs, payment details or login credentials with agents, unofficial websites or social-media accounts. Register, fill choices, pay applicable fees and respond to allotments only on the official portal.

How to make a better choice list

A choice list is not a prediction of what you will get. It is your real order of preference. Put programmes in the order you would choose them if every option were available.

Recommended approach

  • Start with your true academic preference, not only rumours about closing ranks.
  • Compare programme interest, curriculum, location, costs and future opportunities.
  • Use official 2026 opening and closing rank data only as a reference, not a guarantee.
  • Include aspirational, realistic and safer preferences in your genuine order.
  • Review every choice and its order before locking.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Copying another student's choice list without considering your priorities.
  • Putting an unwanted programme higher just because it is considered prestigious.
  • Ignoring institute location, branch interest or total cost.
  • Waiting until the last minutes to lock choices.
  • Believing anyone who promises a seat in exchange for money or credentials.

Freeze, Float and Slide: understand before choosing

The live JoSAA Business Rules and your personal portal are final. These simplified explanations help you understand the decision before you read the official definitions.

Accept and stop upgrades

Freeze

In general, Freeze means you accept the allotted seat and do not seek a further upgrade in later rounds. Use this only when you are satisfied with the allotted option and have checked all applicable rules.

Accept and seek better preference

Float

In general, Float means you accept the current seat while remaining open to a better preferred academic programme or institute in later rounds, as allowed under the official rules.

Seek programme upgrade in same institute

Slide

In general, Slide means you accept the current seat while seeking a better preferred programme in the same institute, subject to the current Business Rules and availability.

Prepare your documents before the reporting deadline

Documents differ by candidate category, programme and institute. This is a preparation list—not a replacement for the official checklist in your candidate login and the current Business Rules.

Read the live Business Rules before selecting any option.

Choice editing and locking are permitted only during the official schedule. Once the deadline passes, follow the instructions visible in your candidate account and do not assume a change will be allowed.

Keep JEE records, Class X and XII documents, valid category/PwD certificates if applicable, photo ID, photographs, medical certificate and allotment/payment records ready. The exact list depends on your case and must be confirmed from the current official checklist.
