Use PYQs to learn JEE Advanced thinking

JEE Advanced can test familiar Units and Measurements ideas in less familiar formats. The challenge is usually not recalling a unit; it is tracking dimensions, constraints, significant figures and error rules across multiple steps.

A useful PYQ page should help students recognise the pattern, construct a solution independently and understand why attractive wrong options fail. It should not be only a copied question collection.

What this page provides: source-verification rules, format-aware practice, self-review prompts and original explanations. These elements create meaningful learning value beyond a list of answers.

Rules for publishing JEE Advanced PYQs

JEE Advanced has official question papers across years and papers. Before an item is published as a PYQ, verify its wording and source metadata against the relevant official paper or a reliable archival copy.

Non-negotiable label rule: A question is an official PYQ only when you can show its year, paper and question reference. If you modify a question for learning, label it “adapted practice,” not an official PYQ. Never guess a year, paper number, shift or official source.
  • Keep an editor record containing year, Paper 1 or Paper 2, question number, original question type and source document.
  • Display source metadata immediately above every verified PYQ.
  • Preserve question type: single-correct, multiple-correct, numerical, matching or paragraph-based.
  • Add an original solution, concept tag, common trap and reattempt prompt.
  • Publish only questions whose attribution and answer key have been checked.

Question formats and reasoning patterns

Multiple-correct logic

Several statements may independently satisfy a dimensional or measurement condition.

Matching sets

Match quantities, units, dimensional forms and physical interpretations carefully.

Constraint-based dimensions

Use a given relation, then solve for exponents or possible dimensions.

Error combinations

Distinguish addition rules from product and power rules in multi-step formulas.

Experimental context

Interpret measurement readings, precision, least count and uncertainty logically.

Option elimination

Use dimensions to reject impossible options, then apply the remaining Physics condition.

How to solve and review a JEE Advanced PYQ

  1. Read the instructions first; the marking and response format matters as much as the Physics.
  2. Write the governing relation before substituting dimensions, numbers or options.
  3. For a multiple-correct question, independently test every option—do not stop after finding one true statement.
  4. Label your error: missing concept, algebra, power of unit conversion, option interpretation or incomplete condition.
  5. Reattempt after a gap with the source label hidden, so you solve the method rather than remember the paper.

Example: a dimensionally consistent expression may still be physically incomplete. Dimensional analysis can eliminate impossible expressions, but it cannot determine a dimensionless coefficient or prove that all required variables are present.

Verified PYQs and original advanced practice

The cards below are original JEE Advanced-style practice and not official PYQs. Replace or supplement them only with source-verified items, keeping the metadata format shown in the editor note.

Original advanced practice · Not an official JEE Advanced PYQ
Multiple-correct format
Practice 1 · Dimensional analysis

Let x have dimensions of length and t have dimensions of time. Select all expressions that have dimensions of velocity.

A. x/t
B. x²/t
C. x/t²
D. (x/t) × 1
Show solution

Correct options: A and D. Velocity has dimensions [L T-1]. Expression A has [L]/[T]. Expression D is identical to A because 1 is dimensionless. B has [L² T-1] and C has [L T-2].

Practice 2 · Error propagation

A quantity Q is given by Q = A²B/C³. If percentage errors in A, B and C are 1%, 2% and 1%, respectively, find the maximum percentage error in Q.

A. 3%
B. 5%
C. 7%
D. 9%
Show solution

Answer: C. Maximum percentage error = 2(1%) + 1(2%) + 3(1%) = 7%. Each percentage error is multiplied by the magnitude of the corresponding exponent.

Editor note for verified questions: Put this source line above every official question: “JEE Advanced [year] · Paper [1/2] · Question [number] · [question type].” Confirm every detail from the original paper before it goes live. Do not use an unknown source as an official-paper citation.

Continue with advanced Physics practice

Use timed mixed-topic practice after this chapter. Units and Measurements skills often appear inside mechanics, experimental and calculation-heavy Physics problems.

JEE Advanced Units and Measurements PYQs FAQs

Are all questions here official JEE Advanced PYQs?

No. Only items that carry verified official-paper metadata should be described as PYQs. Original questions remain clearly labelled as advanced practice.

Why should I retain the original JEE Advanced question format?

Question formats affect how you evaluate options and manage risk. Multiple-correct, matching and numerical items need a different approach from single-correct questions.

Can dimensional analysis give the complete answer in every question?

No. It is a powerful consistency and elimination tool, but it cannot determine dimensionless constants or replace physical reasoning when several dimensionally valid relations remain.

What should I do after a wrong PYQ?

Record the missed rule, solve one new variation without looking at the solution, and revisit the original only after a revision gap.
